I've loved the words of Shakespeare for as long as I can remember. When I found a box of Shakespearean word magnets at the book store a while back, I just had to buy them. Once home, I excitedly spread them out across the front of my refrigerator, marveling at the infinite possibilities of Elizabethan phrases I could string together. Before I knew it, I had written the poem below. It graced my fridge for a year. (With apologies to The Bard and The Globe Theatre!)

Wherefore art Thou, my Lordship

Who doth seek thy Lady perchance to Love?

I dream of Thee oft every Night

Alas, my Fortune is Naught.

Make haste Fair Lover

As yonder Light doth soon come

And I shall Vow to be Thine Forever!

Their paths crossed on the 30th
as fate would have it, you know
and their first date was on New Year's Eve
just a couple of years ago.

They laughed and chatted the night away
of music and concerts and bliss
becoming more smitten as the clock counted down
and at midnight shared in their first kiss.

Over time came a closeness she couldn't believe
falling in love was no one's surprise
he meant the world and her everything
and she saw forever in his eyes.

He'd never felt like this before
and at first he longed to embrace it
then walls of fear tortured his heart
such deep love, he just couldn't face it.

He pushed her away and shattered her heart
hating that he caused her so much sorrow
his fear demons inside were his own to quell
though he loved her like there's no tomorrow.

It's been a season without the love of her life
Another New Year's Eve of eyes crying
She raises her glass wiping away a tear
remembering a different Auld Lang Syne
